WAL-MART AND HUMAN RIGHTSEarly in February of 2005, Wal-Mart announced that it was closing its recently organized store in Jonquiere, Quebec. The company claimed that it was not meeting profit targets but many observers believed that it was part of a standing strategy designed to dissuade employees from exercising their right to organize and bargain collective. In response, I wrote an oped piece for the Toronto Star that is included below. In addition, I circulated a letter that as of February 28, 2005 had been signed by well over 200 people including professors from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Oxford and Cambridge. That letter and sign-on list (current to February 28, 2005) is also included below. A version of the Wal-Mart letter was published on February 18 th by The Guardian (UK).
